By: Mhon NavarroSenator Manny Pacquiao supports the death penalty for it is “moral and lawful”.
The senator supports President Rodrigo Duterte in reviving the death penalty in the Philippines, which was deferred by former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and her successor, President Benigno Aquino III. Pacquiao cited, the bible as his basis, that God is not just for mercy, but he is also a God of justice. According to him, the death penalty is justifiable. He also said that he preferred the execution of the death penalty be done by hanging. The senator believes hanging is more “humane” compared to lethal injection for both the criminal and the doctors are forced to assist in carrying out the sentence. By: Denise Go A Dubai Cebu Pacific passenger gave birth to a baby on a plane bound for Manila on August 15. It was not just an ordinary flight for Missy Berberabe Umandal, one of the passengers in the plane, as she shares her experience in social media. According to Umandal the woman who gave birth started having contractions while they’re still five hours away from the Philippines. Luckily, there were two nurses on the plane who assisted the woman; it only took one push for the baby to come out. The woman and the baby are in good condition. The woman was brought to a more spacious area in front the plane, and afterwards she returned to her seat after giving birth. One of the passengers even provided the baby infant clothes. It was a big surprise for everyone on the plane, even the mother, because she was expected to give birth by October. The flight was delayed for nine hours because the pilot decided to take an emergency landing in India for the baby’s safety. Even though the flight was delayed, everyone on the plane felt “blessed” because of what happened. Umandal said that the baby will be given the chance to travel for free in Cebu Pacific. However, Cebu Pacific did not yet confirm anything regarding this matter. Under the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness of the United Nations Convention on International Civil Aviation, the baby born on a ship or aircraft will take the "citizenship" of the airline and since Cebu Pacific is registered in the Philippines, the baby will carry a Filipino citizenship even though the baby was born in India. It is advised for women beyond six months pregnant not to board a plane unless they have a clearance from their OB-Gyne. By: Angelica UyA violent Tornado smashes some parts of Manila rending off roofs and uprooting trees, Sunday afternoon, August 14, with swirling debris into the air.
Manila Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office said that the tornado began in Brgy.435 and made its way to Baseco in Tondo. Around 20 houses were left roofless, and even the newly constructed covered court that is designed to be an evacuation center was not spared from damage of the tornado. According to PAG-ASA’s forecaster, Aldczar Aurelio, they have monitored a thunderstorm in their radar that may have caused the tornado. The continuous heavy rains brought by the “Hanging Habagat” (southwest monsoon) might be the cause of the tornado’s formation in Manila. As of now, two people were reported injured in the brief rare windstorm. By: Angelica Uy

By: Denise Go Dr. Augusto Litonjua, Philippine Center for Diabetes Education Foundation president, said that six million could double or even more by the year 2040 because of undiagnosed diabetes cases.
In a press conference in Quezon City, Dr. Litonjua said that we are losing the war against diabetes because it keeps increasing in prevalence around the world. He also added that the Philippines has a 6.1 prevalence rate of diabetes which means that six million Filipinos are currently diabetic. For every Filipino who is diagnosed with diabetes, there is another person out there who is also suffering from diabetes but is not yet aware that he/she has diabetes. Diabetes happens when the blood sugar or blood glucose is too high. Diabetes is a complex condition that can affect your entire body. Every individual needs glucose in their body to keep their energy high but too much glucose results to diabetes. Dr. Litonjua cited that individuals who work late at night and sleeps in the morning are more prone to diabetes. He explained that this reverse habit destroys the body sleep-wake cycles which makes the body suffer from stress. Filipinos should not only be afraid of cancer, Zika virus, HIV and dengue, they should also be afraid of diabetes because in every six seconds, there’s one person out there who dies because of diabetes complications. Dr. Litonjua advises the public to avoid the three “Ks” – katakawan (gluttony), katamaran (laziness), and katabaan (obesity). Dr. Litonjua recommends to have persons over the age of 40 be checked for diabetes, even though they do not have a family history of diabetes. By: Denise Go Vice President Leni Robredo requested Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) and the airline Cathay Pacific to look into an evident attempt to open her luggage on her flight home to the Philippines from the United States.
The two pieces of luggage were delivered to Robredo’s office from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) on Thursday with tons of scratches and dents. Lt. Danilo Vidad, security aide of Robredo, said that there seems to have been a tool used in attempting to open the luggage that’s why there are scratches. Robredo confirmed that there was nothing missing from her luggage. However, she still requested MIAA to look into the matter and seek an explanation from Cathay Pacific. Robredo attended a women’s event in Thailand and spoke at a conference sponsored by National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA) in United States. She then returns to the U.S via Hong Kong, arriving around 1 a.m. at the Naia Terminal 3 on Thursday. Arnulfo Junio, MIAA intelligence and management department manager, said that the agency already investigated and they found out that the damages did not happen at NAIA and that Robredo’s luggage was a priority and it was delivered on time. He also added that the agency reviewed the CCTV footage in the baggage area during the processing of the passenger’s luggage from the Cathay Pacific flight and saw nothing unusual. By: Denise Go The help of technical experts from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) were requested by the Department of Energy (DOE) in order to formulate a more “responsive and dynamic” energy mix for the Philippines.
Energy Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi said that the main concern now is to increase the availability of reliable, secure, quality, and affordable supply. Luzon grid is placed on red alert status several times for the past weeks due to simultaneous outages of key energy facilities, that’s why it is an important issue in looking for the right mix of coal, renewable energy, natural gas and many more. According to the current policy, the country should source 10 percent from oil based power plants, 30 percent of its energy requirements from coal, 30 percent from renewable gas and another 30 percent from natural gas. Cusi met with the members of USAID’s Building Low Emission Alternatives to Develop Economic Resilience and Sustainability (B-LEADERS) recently to tackle the formulation of a more effective energy mix and to look into local reserve requirements. They also wanted to look into the availability of indigenous energy to ensure the stability of the price and to lessen the dependence on energy by international market prices. |
