By: Christelle MarambaElvira Savino, an Italian Parliament member, proposed a new law which could imprison parents who imposes a vegan diet on their children. The law was created in response to the four cases of malnourishment in children who are on a vegan diet reported in Italy in the last 18 months.
Veganism is a diet that abstains from any kind of food made from animals. Saviro defended that she has nothing against veganism as long as it is a free choice made by adults. The law proposes a year in jail for any parent who raises their children on a vegan diet. The penalty would increase to four years if the child suffers an illness or develops a terminal health problem as a result and up to seven years in the case of death. The law would apply to children under the age of 16. Some pediatricians advice against a vegan diet for children because it lacks sufficient nutrition, but according to the American Dietetic Association, vegan is fine for children as long as their parents assures to provide them with the nutrients required.

By: Christelle MarambaInternational Archaeologists, led by Jaime Awe from University of Arizona, discovered an important Maya tomb in Belize. This tomb was uncovered at Xunantunich, a city on the Mopan river in western Belize that was once the ceremonial center for the Maya, and may be the biggest royal tomb found in over a century of work on Maya ruins.
The tomb was found under a stairway of a temple and it seemed as if the temple was built with the main purpose of enclosing the tomb. Inside they found hieroglyphic panels that offer new clues about the legendary “Snake Dynasty” and a male corpse that must have been prominent during his time. Beside his remains are the bones of a jaguar and a deer, 13 obsidian blades, 36 ceramic vessels and six jade beads. In another part of the tomb, they found two offering caches that contained nine obsidian blades and 28 flint figurines. At first analysis, the corpse was said to be between 20 to 30 years old and seemed to be quite muscular at his death, further study shall provide more information about his life. Finding a tomb is always special for archaeologists, but this one is special because it is the biggest burial chamber found in Belize, measuring at 4.5 meters (14.7 feet) by 2.4 meters (7.9 feet). By: Christelle MarambaChimera is a controversial research which creates embryos that are part-human and part-animal. Last year, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) declared a moratorium against the research because of ethical concerns. However, on August 4, NIH proposed a new policy allowing researchers to get federal funding for the said project, but under strict and carefully monitored conditions.
The purpose of the Chimera Research is to grow human organs inside animals, which they could then transplant to people who need them. The number one concern about this project is that scientists could accidentally create animals with partly-human brains or human sperms and eggs, but NIH quickly eased the minds of the people by saying that there are ways to prevent it from happening. The new NIH proposal would create a committee to review the proposed experiments in the field but it will keep primates, such as apes and chimps, off-limits. The moratorium will remain in place while the agency reviews and seek public comments about the proposed policy. Since these little buggers are filled with protein, their milk just might become the next super food for human beings as according to some scientists from India.
Findings were published this month, led by Subramanian Ramaswamy, a biochemist at the Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine in Bangalore, India, and it showed that the Pacific Beetle cockroach is a type of cockroach that doesn’t lay eggs and it feeds its bug babies with a kind of liquid that is rich in Protein, Fats, Sugar, Amino acids and has four times as many nutrients as cow’s milk. Scientists saw that the said liquid is like crystals and glitter under a microscope, they are also the most nutritious and highly caloric substance per weight ever. Some researchers are now trying to replicate the crystals in a lab since they say that the cockroach milk crystals may be used as a valuable protein supplement for humans.
