By: Angelica UyEarly morning of July 19, North Korea fired three ballistic missiles into its east coast after the announcement of the United States that they will deploy an anti-missile system in South Korea. The said defense system was the advanced US Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD).
The ballistic missiles of North Korea was said to be Scud-type weapons by the South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff which ranges of about 500 to 600 kilometers (300-380 miles). This was not the first ballistic missiles that North Korea fired off for the month of July, in fact they already fired a ballistic missile from a submarine off the country's east coast last July 9, which shortly and subsequently fell into the water.

By: Angelica UyAn anti-smuggling operation of the Malaysian Marine Police was held last July 16 in the coast of Sabah, Malaysia after a tip-off that smugglers were operating in the area. Three police vessels were sent to intercept the suspected smugglers.
On the same day, when the police were already in the view, four wooden boats powered by modified water pumps began speeding away. Four Filipino skippers and eight other illegal immigrants from the Philippines were chased and detained by the police. On board they found white sacks containing thousands of smuggled sea turtle eggs. If the suspected smugglers were convicted they could face up five years in prison and a hefty fine. By: Angelica UyLast July 23, the Torch of Dignity relay has been launched at the Thunderbird House in Canada, hosted by the Manitobans for human rights.
This event was joined by about 100 torch bearers who ran a 19-kilometer relay. It ended with a celebration in Assiniboine Park where Senator Murray Sinclair spoke and reminded people "not to become complacent about human rights." The passing of torch signifies the commitment to work together to enhance human rights. Canada is one of the ten participating countries who celebrate in promoting human rights around the world. In a report brought by the Philippines, Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) also found out that China had violated the sovereign right of the Philippines within its exclusive economic zone (EEZ) by interfering with fishing and petroleum exploration, constructing artificial islands, and failing to prevent Chinese fishermen in from fishering into the zone". The violations of China do not only affect the Philippine's prerogative will, but also "caused a severe harm to the marine life and have violated their own obligations to protect and preserve fragile ecosystems and the habitat of the endangered species", the tribunal concluded. It was in the year 2013 when Manila took its fight against Beijing's claim of sovereignity over West Philippine Sea to The Hague-Permanent Court of Arbitration. This marks the first time the international court has ruled on the overlapping claims on the sea. China refused to accept the arbitration and to participate in this case; however, this refusal did not deprive the court of jurisdiction. Now, the international tribunal has ruled in favour of the Philippines in the case over West Philippine Sea also known as South China Sea. By: Denise Go Shuqin is the seven year old female panda that gave birth to its first cub through natural mating last Saturday, July 16 at the China Conservation and Research Centre for Giant Pandas (CCRCGP). The cub is considered the first to be born this way in the country this year. Keepers are not yet aware of the gender of the cub because after Shuqin gave birth she cuddled and hid the cub from them. Nevertheless, the keepers said they think the cub is healthy because they heard it crying. Luo Bo, the deputy director of the center, said Shuqin mated with two male pandas named Jinke and Xiangge last March. Cub's bloodline will be determined through a DNA test in the latter part. They started to monitor Shuqin since July 13 but on June 19 they started to notice the pregnancy signs. According to research, most giant pandas in captivity are a not good breeders, that’s why China developed supportive breeding techniques to sustain the critically endangered species. The center also has three other female pandas that are currently showing signs of pregnancy. by Angelica UyJanuary 1, 1973 the United Kingdom joined the European Economic Community (EEC). Three years after joining, they held a referendum whether the UK should remain in the EEC or not. Garnering 67.2% of votes to stay and 32.8% disagreement, United Kingdom remained a member of the EEC. The organization later became European Union as a result of the Maastricht Treaty on November 1, 1993.
Last June 23, the UK electorate again addressed the question in a historic referendum on the country's membership to the European Union (EU). This resulted with a 51.9% votes for the exit while 48.1% voted to remain, which implies that Britain after a long year will be able to establish its own economy, politics and borders. But it's not easy as what everyone think, this will take a long way process since it had to be done legally. The withdrawal of a member state from EU was established in the Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union. Once a member invokes the Article 50 it will have a two-year window in which to negotiate a new treaty to replace the terms of the EU membership. Today, the European Union has 28 state-members. Britain's decision to leave the EU made a great shock in the whole world. From the day of voting, the British pounds have lost almost 9% of its value. This huge market's volatility might merely affect its economic growth. Aside from the economy, Brexit might also cause a great change in their immigration. Britain's free movement among EU countries that enable them to move along English Channel might profoundly transform. Another one is its borders. The Brexit matter could set off the United Kingdom which is made up of four countries-England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. The "United" Kingdom was in danger since some of its countries supports to remain in EU. When it continues to withdraw from EU, the border could give more tensions and flare up the territory. by Angelica UyAt the end of the day, Donald Trump stood up for Brexit, saying the choice of Britain to leave the European Union is a “great thing.”
The presumptive Republican presidential nominee visited the Turnberry Resort in South Ayrshire to formally re-open his newly furnished resort, which he bought in Scotland back in 2014, just an hour after the United Kingdom’s Prime Minister David Cameron announced to step down his term by October. The press conference he held in his resort was dominated with his presidential campaigns and his comments about Britain’s decision to leave the European Union. While he was speaking on the ninth hole of his golf course, he was interrupted by a British comedian/prankster Lee Nelson who held up and handed the crowd several swastika-emblazoned golf balls and was later escorted out by the security personnel. Trump salutes Britain's decision to leave EU and the United Kingdom were now one step closer to embrace their independence to control over their economy, politics and borders. by Angelica UyNASA stepped up towards creating a future Solar System Internet by building up operational Delay/Disruption Tolerant Networking (DTN) service on the International Space Station.
The DTN service will help automate and enhance information’s accessibility for space station experimenters and will bring about more effective transmission capacity use and more information return. Delay/Disruption Tolerant Networking is a protocol effectively designed to reduce delay or disruption of data from extreme distances of destination that is more applicable to space environment. This works by providing a dependable and programmed "store and forward" data network that stores partial bundles of data in nodes along a correspondence way until the parts can be sent or retransmitted, then re-bundled at the last destination – either to ground stations on Earth, automated rocket in profound space, or, one day, people living on different planets. This varies from customary Internet Protocols that requires all nodes in the transmission way to be accessible amid the same time period for a successful data transmission. Meanwhile, DTN was added to the Telescience Resource Kit (TReK), a product suite for specialists to transmit and get information between operation centers and their payloads on board station. This administration on the station will likewise improve mission bolster applications, including operational record exchanges. |
